NEWBERRY - On the heels of a two-goal second half from senior Kofi Kufuor, the Newberry men's soccer team earned its second victory of the season as the Wolves toppled the visiting Belmont Abbey Crusaders 2-0.
The Wolves (2-1) and Crusaders (2-1) combined for 11 shots in the first half, but saw their efforts either turned away or off frame.
After starting the match for the Wolves, Kufuor (Accra, Ghana) reentered the match as a second half substitute in the 68th minute, only a minute later Kufuor found himself celebrating his second goal of the season. Freshman Lucas Ferreira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) sent a low cross toward the six-yard box which skipped past the Belmont Abbey keeper before being tapped into the net by Kufuor.
In the 73rd minute, the Crusaders made a goalkeeping change and soon saw new keeper Jordan Junot tested by the Wolves. Junot's first test of the afternoon did not end favorably as Kufuor chipped the ball over Junot off well timed pass from freshman Mario Stojkoski (Skopje, Macedonia).
The Wolves were outshot on the afternoon by Belmont Abbey 18-15, while the two teams finished the match even 3-3 in corner kicks.
Newberry junior goalkeeper Patrick Sweatt recorded six saves and a clean sheet in his first outing of 2012.
The Wolves hit the road on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. showdown in Morrow, Ga., against Clayton State.
