MARS HILL, N.C. - Newberry was unable to carry momentum from an upset win over then-No. 9 Lander on Saturday, as the Wolves dropped a 4-1 decision at Mars Hill on Wednesday night despite a goal from sophomore Joao Delgado.
Newberry (4-4-0, 0-2-0 South Atlantic Conference) battled with Mars Hill (6-2-0, 3-0-0 SAC) early in a very physical first half, but in the 25th minute the Lions notched the first goal of the match when Juan Kromschroder sent a cross just outside the six-yard box that found the head of a charging Gregg Munn who directed the ball past Newberry goalkeeper Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad and Tobago).
The Lions struck again in the 29th minute when a long ball over the top by Troy Chavez found an onside Stephen Bivens who beat Johnson one-on-one. Alex Mullen tallied the third goal of the match from 20 yards out in the 33rd minute.
Mars Hill picked up a fourth in the 47th minute when Rury Caulfield scored from 25 yards out.
Newberry avoided being shutout in the 64th minute when Stephen Harvey (Kingston, Jamaica) found Delgado (Atlanta, Ga.) who placed a shot into the goal from about 10 yards out. Delgado's goal was his third of the season and the assist was Harvey's third of the season.
The Wolves head back onto the road Saturday where they will meet Tusculum at 7:30 p.m.
