Saturday, September 17, 2011

HARROGATE, Tenn. - The men's soccer team was handed its third loss of the 2011 season on Saturday when Lincoln Memorial topped the Wolves 5-1 in the South Atlantic Conference opener.

LMU (2-2-1, 1-0 SAC) scored early when Mario Pinto scored goals in both the 18th minute and 20th minute. Pinto's two goal first half was followed by a 45th minute tally by Callum Home.

Up 3-0 after the break the Railsplitters added to their goal total in the 49th minute when Pinto netted a hat trick on a header from about 12 yards out. Chris Nash scored the fifth and final goal for LMU in the 57th minute.

The Wolves (3-3, 0-1 SAC) avoided being shutout when sophomore Stephen Harvey (Kingston, Jamaica) delivered a long pass to sophomore Kofi Kufuor (Accra, Ghana). In the 76th minute Kufuor chipped the LMU keeper for his first collegiate goal.

Goalkeeper Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.) recorded five saves in 64 minutes played, while back-up keeper Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad & Tobago) was not forced to make a save in 26 minutes of action.

Newberry continues the 2011 season on Saturday September, 24 at 4 p.m. when it plays host to Lander in a non-conference match.
