NEWBERRY, S.C. - Only four matches into the season the Newberry Wolves have topped their win total from a season ago, thanks to a 2-0 home victory over Pfeiffer.
The Wolves (2-2-0) found the back of the net early when sophomore Joao Delgado (Atlanta, Ga.) corralled a pass from junior Adrian Ochoa (East Point, Ga.). After a quick touch of his own Delgado let go a shot from about 25 yards out that curled into the side netting on the far side of the goal. Delgado's first goal of the season came in the 5th minute as he beat Pfeiffer‘s (1-4-0) freshman keeper Zach Liles.
Shortly after the goal from Delgado the Wolves added a second goal to the scoreboard. In the 11th minute sophomore Joseph Santos (Charleston, S.C.) hit a low cross to the back post that freshman Kyle Maitland (Columbia, S.C.) flicked into the goal for his third tally of the season. Maitland's goal came in his first collegiate start.
The Wolves outshot the Falcons 10-9 in the match despite the two teams only getting three shots off each in the second half.
The second half was a physical one as Newberry racked up 11 fouls as it tried to control possession.
In goal Newberry sophomore keeper Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.) earned his first victory and clean sheet of the season. Sweatt earned his second career clean sheet in a match where he was only required to make one save. Despite the low number of saves, Sweatt controlled the 18-yard box by corralling multiple crosses the Falcons sent in.
Newberry wraps up its homestand on Wednesday as it plays host to USC Aiken at 4 p.m.
