NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry men's soccer team was handed its second loss of the season despite seven saves by sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Sweatt in a 3-0 decision at the hands of Saint Leo.
Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.) faced a total of 14 shots during the match and of those on frame was able to keep seven out of the net.
The Wolves (1-2-0) fell behind in the seventh minute when Joel Purkiss of Saint Leo (3-0-0) corralled a rebound and shot the ball past Sweatt who was still on the ground after his diving save of the first shot. Saint Leo scored once again in the 18th minute when Edgar Herrera notched his third goal of the season when the Lions stretched the Wolves defense. Saint Leo's attack out ran the Wolves backline and allowed Aaron Gendreau to record his second assist of the afternoon as Herrera found the back of the goal.
Newberry seemed to have the defense in the second half to shut down the Lions, but a nifty chip pass by Purkiss sprung Bruno Da Silva for his second goal of the year in the 84th minute.
The Wolves outshot Saint Leo 16-14 and received five shots from sophomore Stephen Harvey (Kingston, Jamaica).
Newberry continues its home stand on Monday against Pfeiffer. The Wolves and Falcons meet up at 4 p.m. on September 12. The five match home stand for Newberry will end on Wednesday against USC Aiken.
