NEWBERRY, S.C. - Freshman Kyle Maitland scored two goals as the Newberry Wolves picked up their first victory of the 2011 season in a 4-0 win over Chowan.

Newberry (1-1-0) controlled the match from the beginning notching 12 first half shots, but Chowan (0-2-0) keeper Ethan Phelps kept the Wolves off the board.

It wasn't until the 52nd minute that the Wolves were able to record a tally. Newberry's first goal came off a free kick as sophomore midfielder Jay Barajas (Atlanta, Ga.) sent a cross into sophomore midfielder Joao Delgado (Atlanta, Ga.). After Delgado's shot was knocked away by Phelps, junior defender Colt Priest (Marietta, Ga.) knocked in the rebound for his first goal of the season.

In the 53rd minute Maitland (Columbia, S.C) took on the Chowan defense on his own, and after beating the back line the freshman was able to beat Phelps for the first goal of his career. Maitland wasn't done in the 61st when a corner from Stephan Bass found Priest. A deflected shot by Priest found Maitland who calmly put the ball into the goal.

Newberry sophomore Kyle Wyszynski (Aiken, S.C.) scored a highlight reel goal in the 70th minute when a would be cross from 45 yards out curled into the upper 90. Wyszynski's goal is the first of his career.

Junior goalkeeper Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad and Tobago) posted his first clean sheet of the season and the first clean sheet for Newberry since September 13 when Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.) shutout Chowan in a 4-0 victory.

The Newberry victory was the first of head coach Barry Slagle's career as a collegiate head coach.

Slagle's squad continues its home slate Friday at 4 p.m. against Saint Leo.
