Ochoa's wonder goal not enough for Wolves in 2-1 loss

Ochoa's wonder goal not enough for Wolves in 2-1 loss
Sunday, September 4, 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C. - For some of the first half it appeared Newberry College's new head coach Barry Slagle would secure his first victory, but Palm Beach Atlantic overcame a first half Newberry goal to earn a 2-1 victory over the Wolves.

The Wolves (0-1-0) struck first in the 15th minute as junior Colt Priest (Marietta, Ga.) found Stephen Harvey (Kingston, Jamaica) on a throw-in. Harvey, a sophomore midfielder, fed junior Adrian Ochoa (East Point, Ga.) who placed a beautiful chip shot over the keeper from 35 yards.

Palm Beach Atlantic (1-0-0) evened the score when Lewis Thompson hammered in a goal after Newberry goalkeeper Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.) punched out a save on a Matt Crumb header.

The match got physical in the second half where the two teams combined for 17 fouls and five yellow cards. Despite the physical play the Sailfish took advantage of confusion to score the game winner. After Newberry defender Brady Francis (Aiken, S.C.) collided with Palm Beach Atlantic forward Charlie Hubbard, PBA forward Evan Singlar blasted a shot from within the 18-yard box at Sweatt who was unable to get enough of his hand on the shot as it deflected into the goal.

Despite the loss Sweatt recorded eight saves on the afternoon.

Newberry continues its opening week with an early evening match with Chowan on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
