Newberry powers past Catawba with big second half, 4-2
Thursday, October 15, 2009

SALISBURY, N.C. - The Newberry College men's soccer team took advantage of three goals in the second half to secure its first South Atlantic Conference win of the season, topping the Catawba College Catawba Indians, 4-2.

Newberry (2-10-2, 1-4 SAC) scored a goal in the first half and three goals in the second to keep Catawba (4-8-1, 0-4-1 SAC) winless in the SAC.

Goals from Tornubari Nyonebue (Rivers State, Nigeria) and Adrian Ochoa (East Point, Ga.) accounted for Newberry's highest offensive output of the season in the team's last road game in 2009.

Newberry goalkeeper Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad and Tobago) made seven saves to lock up his second win of the season. His record moves to 2-9-1 with the win.

Catawba scored first, striking quickly with a goal nine minutes into the match from Valentin Nava, who put a seven-yard shot away thanks to a feed from Deon Cuffie-Joseph. The score put the Catawba Indians up, 1-0.

The scarlet and gray did not let Catawba hold the lead for long, however. Tornubari Nyonebue took the ball through the defense in the 14th minute and converted from 15 yards away, tying the game at 1-1. The goal marks Nyonebue's first in a Newberry uniform.

Catawba took the lead just before halftime, scoring 33 seconds before the break. Andrew Landry took a Kirby Freeland though pass and put the ball in the right side of the net, giving the Catawba Indians the lead going into halftime, 2-1.

Newberry came out a different team in the second half, exploding for three goals to bury Catawba. The first came in the 58th minute, when Stephan Bass (Fayetteville, Ga.) passed to Adrian Ochoa, who launched a shot under Catawba goalkeeper Tyler Held to even the score, 2-2.

Tornubari Nyonebue notched his second of the game and of the season in the match's 75th minute. Nyonebue scooped up a rebound that glanced off of a Catawba defender and buried it in the net, giving Newberry the 3-2 advantage.

Newberry put one more goal away, an own goal in the 80th minute that provided the scarlet and gray with an insurance goal. The Newberry defense would hold and and Newberry prevailed, 4-2.

Tornubari Nyonebue led Newberry with four shots and three shots on goal.

Newberry's Justin Blomdahl (Pawleys Island, S.C.), Francisco Espinoza (Brenham, Texas), David Contee (Sumter, S.C.) and Tornubari Nyonebue each received a yellow card in the match. Deon Cuffie-Joseph and Kevin Sorensen each received a yellow card for Catawba.

Newberry returns home for its next match to kick off a four-game homestand to end the season. The team hosts Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, October 17. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
