FLORENCE - The Newberry College men's soccer team ventured outside of South Atlantic Conference play but not outside of South Carolina when the team visited Francis Marion University Wednesday evening, but the scarlet and gray fell to the Patriots, 4-0.
Newberry (1-10-2) took 10 shots on Francis Marion (6-3-2), who scored all four of its goals in the first half to defeat the scarlet and gray.
Marvin Torvic's (French Guiana) four shots and three shots on goal led Newberry in both categories. Tornubari Nyonebue (Rivers State, Nigeria) contributed with the team's other two shots on goal.
Newberry goalkeeper Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad and Tobago) made four saves in the match before Pedro Velazquez (Newburgh, N.Y.) came into the match in the 76th minute. Velazquez made one save. Johnson's record moves to 1-9-2.
Francis Marion struck first, when Juan Rivas scored from nine yards away in the 13th minute on a pass from Chris Foltanski to put the Patriots up, 1-0. Foltanski followed up his assist with a goal of his own in the 25th minute, capping a long run with a 15-yard shot that found the back of the net to give Francis Marion a 2-0 lead.
Francis Marion scored its third goal after Cameron Mabee's corner kick found Kyle Clinton, who deflected the ball for Adrian Williams to score and put Francis Marion ahead, 3-0.
The Patriots' final goal came in the 37th minute. After a Julian Ramjohn throw-in, Juan Rivas sent a feed to Chris Foltanski who scored from 10 yards out to give Francis Marion its eventual final 4-0 lead.
Tornubari Nyonebue tested Francis Marion goalkeeper Clark Richeson first for Newberry, putting a shot on in the 14th minute that Richeson would keep out of the net. Nyonebue returned for a scoring chance in the 66th minute, avoiding Richeson's penalty area challenge but taking a shot that drifted right of the net.
Moise Nkoko (Atlanta, Ga.) and Tornubari Nyonebue each received a yellow card for Newberry.
Newberry returns to South Atlantic Conference action when the team travels to Catawba College on Wednesday, October 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
