GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Newberry College men's soccer team faced off against Tusculum College Sunday afternoon in an effort to lock up its first South Atlantic Conference win of the season, but fell short in a 3-0 loss.
Newberry (1-8-2, 0-3-0 SAC) gave up two first half goals to Tusculum and another one in the second half (6-2-1, 2-2-0 SAC) while sending in five shots on goal of its own.
Adrian Ochoa (East Point, Ga.) and Kofi Kufuor (Accra, Ghana) led Newberry with two shots each. The scarlet and gray tallied eight shots total.
Goalkeeper Pedro Velazquez (Newburgh, N.Y.) made his first start in a Newberry jersey and had a busy day in net. Tusculum launched 17 shots on goal and Velazquez made 13 saves, the second-highest total for the scarlet and gray this season. Velazquez made six saves in the first half and seven saves in the second half but saw his record move to 0-1-0.
Newberry tested Tusculum goalkeeper Lance Moore early in the match, as Adrian Ochoa put two shots on goal in the 19th and 20th minutes. Marvin Torvic (French Guiana) took Newberry's only other shot on goal in the half, looking to score with a shot in the 29th minute.
Colt Priest looked to pull Newberry closer with a shot on goal in the 59th minute and Kofi Kufuor followed with a chance in the 81st minute, but neither shot found the back of the net.
Tusculum struck 30 minutes into the game, taking the lead on a Marc Joseph goal from a Lucas Paulini lead pass to make the score 1-0 in favor of the home team. The Pioneers would score once more before the halftime break, going up 2-0 after Scott Lucky took a pass from Andres Jarquin and curled in a shot from three yards away.
Tusculum added its third goal 15 minutes into the second half. Lucas Paulini sent in a cross that Andres Jarquin corralled and put inside the far post to give Tusculum a 3-0 lead.
Newberry returns home for its next match, a South Atlantic Conference tilt against Wingate University on Wednesday, October 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
