JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry College men's soccer team (5-10-1, 5-2-1 SAC) fell in their bid to claim a share of the South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Title as they lost to Carson-Newman, 2-0.
With the victory Carson-Newman clinched a share of the Regular Season SAC title withTusculumCollege, who both finished 6-1-1 in league play.
The game's first goal came from Carson-Newman junior Omar Cooke (Roanoke,Va.) in the 41st minute, when he snuck the ball past goalkeeper James Woods (Summerville,S.C.) on a short cross from Gus Jimenez (Alpharetta,Ga.).
Cooke's goal made the halftime score 1-0 in favor of the Eagles.
The second half remained scoreless until the 90th minute of the game, when Cooke found the back of the net again. This time he was assisted by Richard Marquetty (New York,N.Y.). Cooke drove to the goal and slid the ball past Woods.
The conference match-up was a physical game with each team tallying 14 fouls.
The Eagles will be back in action next week for the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Their first match will be held at McCown Field and the time and day will be determined Sunday afternoon.
The scarlet and gray will face WingateUniversityon Wednesday, Nov. 5 as they host the Bulldogs in the first round of the Food Lion SAC Tournament.
The match on Wednesday will be only the second time in school history that Newberry has hosted a first round match with the previous game being a 4-2 loss to Wingate in 2006.
