Newberry loses road match to Pfeiffer, 3-2
Wednesday, October 22, 2008

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Newberry College men's soccer team (5-9-1, 5-1-1 SAC) was unable to claim a road victory against Pfeiffer University (7-7-0) as they fell 3-2.

Pfeiffer notched the first goal, when senior Renato Barbosa (Camp Grande, Brazil) received a pass from Juan Sanchez (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.). Barbosa's shot sailed past goalkeeper Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) into the left corner of the goal.

Senior Wilver Menacho (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) extended the Pfeiffer lead in the 17th minute, when his shot from the top of the box found the back of the net.

Newberry closed the gap on Pfeiffer's lead in the 21st minute as junior Ben Mottel (North August, S.C.) perfectly placed a chipped ball over the head of Pfeiffer goalkeeper Alex Moreno (Huntersville, N.C.) trimming the lead to 2-1.

Pfeiffer took the 2-1 advantage into halftime as both teams rested before the conclusion of the game.

Off a direct kick in the 61st minute, Pfeiffer extended its lead to 3-1. Sanchez fed the ball into the Newberry defensive penalty area, where Brad Sisk (Winston-Salem, N.C.) rapidly played the ball to Boo Tesh (Concord, N.C.), who headed it into the back of the net.

Newberry tried to make a comeback as sophomore Marvin Torvic (French Guiana) rocketed a shot from outside of the box and into the back of the net in the 80th minute to minimize the Pfeiffer lead to 3-2.

Despite the late goal, Newberry was unable to find the back of the net again as they lost their final non-conference game.

Senior Will Dieterich was credited with the loss as he record went to 4-7-0 on the season.

Newberry's final game of the season comes against Carson-Newman on Nov. 1st at 8 p.m. With a victory Newberry will clinch a tie for second place in the South Atlantic Conference and have a possibility of winning the regular-season title.
