MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Newberry College men's soccer team (3-8-1, 3-1-1 SAC) traveled nearly 400 miles to face off against Montevallo University (8-4-0). However, an early goal by the Falcons would be the deciding factor in the game as the scarlet and gray lost, 1-0.
Montevallo's James Ward (Chelmsford, England) gave the Falcons the game-winning goal in the seventh minute as he put the ball in the back of the net after it bounced around in Newberry's penalty area. Austin McIntosh (Sheffield, England) and Jonathan Maloney (West Yorkshire, England) were credited with the assists.
Newberry would try to rally to tie the game, but they were unable to penetrate the Falcon defense as the scarlet and gray only had nine shots during the game and one on frame.
Newberry's best chance for a goal came late in the 90th minute as Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) had two shots in the last minute. His first shot was blocked by the Falcon defense, but Ogunseye collected the ball and fired another shot that missed wide of the goal.
Freshman James Woods (Summerville, S.C.) had seven saves in the loss as his record goes to 1-2-1 on the year.
The scarlet and gray returns to Newberry for a South Atlantic Conference match up against Catawba. The game will also serve as the 2008 Senior Day festivities, where eight seniors will be honored. Kick off is set for 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15th.
