WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry College men's soccer team (3-7-1, 3-1-1 SAC) went on the road during a rainy Wednesday night in North Carolina and came away with a 6-1 victory over Wingate (6-5-1, 0-3-0 SAC).
It was an offensive explosion for the scarlet and gray as three players scored two goals apiece; Ben Mottel (North Augusta, S.C.), Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) and Marvin Torvic (French Guiana).
Ogunseye started the scoring for Newberry as he scored on an unassisted breakaway in the 8th minute to give the scarlet and gray the early 1-0 lead.
In the 15th minute, Newberry went up 2-0 off a corner kick from Nathan Arroyo (Atlanta, Ga.) that connected with Torvic's forehead, which he directed onto the goal and past Bulldogs' goalkeeper.
Torvic would score again two minutes later in the 17th minute as his shot from outside the penalty area sailed into the back of the net giving Newberry a 3-0 advantage.
The scarlet and gray were unable to shutout the Bulldogs as Wingate was awarded a penalty kick in the 24th minute and Luke Mulholland (Ashton, England) would narrow Newberry's lead to 3-1.
Newberry did not show any signs of letting up offensively in the first half as Mottel scored in the 36th minute off a ball that the Wingate defense was unable to clear. Mottel charged onto the ball and placed it into the back of the net giving the scarlet and gray the 4-1 advantage going into halftime.
Coach Sam Okpodu insisted that Newberry continued to keep up the offensive pressure in the second half and they did just that as the scarlet and gray would score again off a corner kick this time in the 51st minute. Mottel netted his second goal of the game as he scored off the corner kick from Trey Boyd (Victoria, Texas).
Ogunseye would put the finishing touches on the game as he scored in 71st minute off another breakaway. Receiving a pass from Shane Abbott (Myrtle Beach, S.C.), Ogunseye exploded past the Bulldogs' defense and defeated the Wingate keeper to cap the game at 6-1.
Goalkeeper James Woods recorded four saves in the victory as he improved his record to 1-1-1.
Newberry will try to extend their winning ways as they travel to Montevallo, Ala. to face off against the Montevallo Falcons at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
