NEWBERRY - The Newberry College men's soccer team (1-5) clashed with the Clayton State Lakers (3-3) at the Newberry Soccer Complex and the game wasn't decided until the dwindling seconds of the second half. However, it was the Lakers who would be the victors as they won, 3-2.
Newberry got a jump start on Clayton State as senior forward Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) scored in the second minute of the game as he dribbled from midfield past the Lakers' defense and shot the ball past goalkeeper David Cristofoli (Johannesburg, South Africa) to give the scarlet and gray the early lead.
The Newberry defense was unable to contain the Lakers offensive attack in the first half as they would score with two minutes remaining in the first half. Leighton Fredericks (Johannesburg, South Africa) received a pass from Liam Brown (Glasgow, Scotland) which set him up for a goal-scoring opportunity that he didn't waste and tied the game at 1-all in the 43rd minute.
The second half was full of excitement as well as late goals. Newberry scored the first late goal in the 83rd minute as senior midfielder Shane Abbott (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) received a pass from Ogunseye that set him up 25 yards away from the goal. Abbott unleashed a rocketed shot that sailed into the upper left corner of the goal, giving the scarlet and gray the late lead. Junior Ben Mottel (North Augusta, S.C.) was also credited with an assist on the goal.
The Lakers struck back in the 88th minute as late substitution Patrick Ahern (Norcross, Ga.) headed a Matty Phillips (Swindon, England) cross into the back of the net to equalize the game.
Phillips would set up another late goal as he crossed the ball once again, this time to Fredericks, who buried a header into the back of the net in the dwindling seconds of the 90th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper James Woods (Summerville, S.C.) recorded three saves in the game as his first start of the season resulted in a loss.
The SAC leading Newberry team will return to the pitch with its SAC home opening match on Saturday against Lincoln Memorial at 2 p.m.
