AIKEN - The Newberry men's soccer team (1-4) traveled to USC Aiken (1-3) in hopes of starting a winning streak, but came away unsuccessful as the Pacers won, 3-2, in double overtime and handed the scarlet and gray their fourth one-goal loss of the season.
The first half was evenly matched as the two teams would have their scoring opportunities but were unable to finish them. The real action of the first half occurred in the 45th minute when sophomore defender Lucas Noboa (Deltona, Fla.) was elbowed in the face by Pacers' Troy Watson (Kingston, Jamaica), who consequently received a red card and was ejected from the game.
The two teams would then play the remaining seconds of the half and begin the second half tied at 0-0.
USC Aiken would begin the scoring in the 55th minute as Tim Costanzo (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) scored off a delivery from Zachary Davis' (Ocala, Fla.) free kick from 40 yards out. Costanzo headed the free kick into the far post giving the Pacers the second half lead.
Aiken continued to score with a goal in the 71st minute, when Davis received a shot off the crossbar and was able to sneak the ball past senior goalkeeper Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla) and give the Pacers the 2-0 lead.
The scarlet and gray were determined to win the game as senior midfielder Shane Abbott (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) blasted a shot from 35 yards out and sailed into the upper right corner of the goal in the 77th minute.
Down by only a goal, Newberry battled hard to score another goal and were successful in the 82nd minute. Freshman midfielder Trey Boyd (Victoria, Texas) connected on a cross from sophomore forward Philippe Millogo (Vienna, Va.) and took a stunning sideways kick that beat the Pacer goalkeeper and tied the game at 2-2.
Overtime was inevitable for the two teams as the 90 minutes couldn't determine a winner. Unfortunately for Newberry, the host team would come away victorious as they scored in the 106th minute as a long punt from goalkeeper Milad Zarien (Ontario, Canada) bounced over the scarlet and gray defense to Davis, who scored his second goal of the contest and the game winning goal.
The game was extremely physical as Newberry received two yellow cards and one red card compared to USC Aiken's four yellow cards and the ejection of Watson.
Newberry will now come home on Wednesday to play against the Clayton State Lakers, game time is set for 5 p.m. and will follow the women's soccer game against Mars Hill.
