MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The men’s lacrosse team made their debut as they traveled to Montevallo, Ala. to face the Falcons of Montevallo. Although the Wolves showed skill and agility in their first-ever contest of their season, they fell to the Falcons 14-11.
The Wolves came out with much confidence, scoring the first goal just two minutes into the game. With a clean pass from Dylan Mansur, Stone Boone was able to sail in the first point for the Wolves. He would also score the next goal for Newberry to elevate them to a 2-1 lead.
With under five minutes remaining in the first period, Belton Bryan added in another goal for the team. With his previous shot aiming a little too high to give the team a two-point edge, Mansur would convert on his second shot to take a 4-2 lead.
The Falcons answered back with two consecutive goals to tie the game up at the end of the first period. After the teams traded goals late into the second half, Montevallo would go on to score the next three goals to extend their lead.
Mansur notched five goals and three assists and took 13 shots on the night. Boone followed suit and tallied three goals of his own and launched off 12 shots. Goalie Erick Szurley started off the season with six saves on the night.
The Falcons had five different players with at least one goal. Montevallo goalie Kyle Little secured the net 16 times in the match up.
Newberry will have one day of rest as they head up the highway to take on Alabama-Huntsville on Feb. 11 at noon. The Wolves will round out their road trip with a contest against Emmanuel before hosting the program's inaugural home game on Tuesday, Feb. 20.
