Wolves earn top spot in season opener

DAHLONEGA, Ga. -  Newberry moved up three spots Tuesday to claim the top spot at the UNG Fall Invitational, shooting a combined 862 and the only team to finish under par. The Wolves finished the third round five under with a tournament-best 283.


The victory marks the second consecutive win for the Wolves at the UNG Fall Invitational. 

 

Carlos Leandro propelled the Wolves to victory after jumping three spots to claim sole possession of first-place with an eight under par score of 208. He finished the third-round shooting four under par for a tournament-low 68 and tallied five birdies.

 

Harry Bolton and Spencer Skiff each had top-15 finishes at the UNG Invitational. Bolton leapt six spots in the standings to finish tied for seventh with North Georgia's Logan Archer, finishing one stroke under par at 71. Skiff ended the day in a four-way tie for 11th place with a score of 217.

 

Ben Thompson rebounded 10 spots to tie for 32nd while Rob Cull finished in a three-way tie for 41st. Stephan Schutt dropped to 68th playing as an individual.

 

Lander grabbed the runner-up spot after tallying a seven over score of 867. Georgia Southwestern jumped five places to clinch third while Carson-Newman fell to fourth. North Georgia rounded out the top-five in the 13-team invitational.

 

The Wolves turn their sights to the South/Southeast Regional Preview Oct. 9-10 at Conover, N.C.
