NEWBERRY - Men's golfer Spencer Skiff has been named Chick-fil-A Student-Athlete of the Month Presented by Sodexo for February 2017 for his stellar work in the community, in the classroom, and on the course for the Wolves.
Skiff is a junior business major from nearby Aiken that holds a 3.46 GPA in Business. He participates in community service initiatives with other members of the golf team, working on beautification and maintenance projects at area golf courses as a way of giving back in return for the team using their facilities.
Skiff had one of the best individual outings in Newberry history in winning the Newberry College Invitational at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island. The course twice named America's most difficult by Golf Digest was no match for Skiff, who finished the 54-hole event eight strokes under par and came within two shots of equaling the course record with a seven-under 65 during the final round.
He won individual medalist honors by four strokes, leaping from 15th position after the first round and fifth after the second. The win was his second of the season and is key to his current fourth-place ranking among Division II competitors in the Golfstat Cup. He currently leads the South Atlantic Conference in stroke average.
The award is bestowed every month on one Newberry College student-athlete for his or her on-field performance, academic achievement and community involvement. The award recipient will be honored on the Chick-fil-A Newberry College Student-Athlete of the Month presented by Sodexo wall in Eleazer Arena.
