NORMAN, Okla. – Carlos Leandro has been named a Second Team Division II PING All-American by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
The rising senior finished in a tie for 10th place in the 54-hole stroke play portion of the NCAA Division II National Championships last month. It marked the best-ever individual finish by a Newberry men’s golfer. A final round even-par 70 in impossibly windy conditions helped Leandro move up 13 spots on the leaderboard in the final 18 holes and placed him at three-over for the tournament.
His efforts were key in securing Newberry’s fifth-place finish at the national finals, tied with the Wolves’ 2011 result as the highest finish in South Atlantic Conference history, and No. 7 final national ranking according to Golfstat.
Leandro finished the season as the eighth-ranked golfer in Division II, leading a contingent of three Wolves ranked among the top 100 by Golfstat. He led the team with a 72.26 stroke average and had a win-loss percentage of 88.5, finishing in the top five on three occasions and carding six top-10’s in his nine events played this season.
He shot at or below par in 10 of his 23.5 rounds with a low round of 68 at the UNG Fall Invitational. Among his three top-five finishes was a second-place effort at the 2017 SAC Men’s Golf Championship.
