GOLDSBORO, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves hold the top four spots in the individual standings and a 21-stroke lead in the team standings after the opening 36 holes at the Mount Olive Invitational on Monday.
Newberry shot 565 (282-283, -11) to hold a 21-stroke lead over host institution Mount Olive. The rounds are Newberry's two best team rounds of the season, besting a 285 at the Ralph Hargett Intercollegiate in March.
"The Wolves have now played five very solid rounds in a row, starting at Lander, where we shot 293-291-290, followed by the 282, 283 today," said head men's golf coach and director of golf Howard Vroon. "We played in 20 mile per hour winds today. To shoot those scores under these conditions is very, very, difficult as evidenced by the performance of the rest of the field. These Wolves played two very impressive rounds of golf today."
Carlos Leandro is the individual leader at 140 (70-70, -4). The two rounds under par give him 10 rounds under par in the 2015-16 season.
Just behind Leandro in a tie for second place are teammates Harry Bolton and Spencer Skiff at 141. Bolton shot 71-70 and Skiff inverted that with rounds of 70-71. At 3-under par for the event, Skiff now has seven rounds under par for the year, while Bolton has two such rounds in his second collegiate event.
In fourth place, only three strokes off the lead, is Evan DeGrazia with a 1-under par 143. DeGrazia shot 71 in the first round and 72 in the second round.
Luke Atack is tied for 21st on the leaderboard as an individual competitor, shooting 152 (76-76, +8), while Fredrik Fossum is tied for 35th at 161 (79-82, +17).
The Wolves will shoot for their second team title of the 2015-16 season with the final 18 holes of the event Tuesday.
