GREENWOOD - All-tournament performances by Carlos Leandro and Fredrik Fossum led the Newberry Wolves to a third place finish at the Bearcat Golf Classic at Greenwood CC on Tuesday afternoon.
Newberry came into the final round trailing eventual champion Young Harris by 13 strokes -- The Wolves would finish in third just three strokes back of YHC and one stroke behind of Lincoln Memorial. Newberry shot 874 (293-291-290, +10), improving each round. The 290 in Tuesday's round tied for the second-lowest round of the day.
Carlos Leandro tied for second place for his highest placement of the season. It is his third top 10 and first top five placement this year. He shot a 2-under par 70 in the final round and finished the tournament at 214 (71-73-70, -2), tying LMU's Connor Froning for second place, two strokes behind medalist Tyler Stone of Wingate (-4).
Fredrik Fossum shot a career low for a 54-hole tournament at 215. The 1-under score (70-73-72) tied him for fourth place, marking both his first top five and top 10 finish of the season. This tournament bests his previous career low by four strokes.
Evan DeGrazia tied for 18th place in the individual standings at 220 (75-72-73, +4), with Harry Bolton tying for 36th in his collegiate debut at 225 (77-73-75, +9).
Nick Lussier and Luke Atack tied for 64th in the 90-man field at 230 (+14), with Atack competing as an individual.
The Wolves play in one more regular season tournament, traveling to Goldsboro, N.C., for the Mount Olive Invitational next Monday and Tuesday at Walnut Creek CC.
The South Atlantic Conference Tournament takes place on April 17-19 at Etowah Valley CC in Etowah, N.C.
