MONROE, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves shot their first under-par round of the season and are in eighth place after 36 holes at the Ralph Hargett Intercollegiate hosted by Wingate University at the Monroe CC on Sunday.
Newberry shot a season-best 285 (-3) in the first round of the tournament for the first under-par round of the year. After 36 holes, Newberry is in eighth place with a 581 (285-296, +5). Young Harris has the lead in the tournament at 10-under par. The second round is not completed officially, as five golfers' rounds were still in progress as darkness fell.
Carlos Leandro tied his career low in the opening round with a 2-under par 70. Nick Lussier also set a career low in the first round with a 1-under par 71. Evan DeGrazia and Fredrik Fossum each shot even par 72 in the opening round to total Newberry's 285.
The Wolves' score jumped a bit to 296 in the second round. Leandro and Fossum each shot 73, while Lussier shot 74 and DeGrazia totaled 76.
After the second round, with placements unofficial due to the five remaining players, Leandro is tied for 16th at -1, Fossum and Lussier are tied for 26th at +1, DeGrazia is tied for 41st at +4 and Spencer Skiff is tied for 61st at +9.
The third and final round of the tournament begins at 9 a.m. Monday following the completion of the five players' second rounds.
