KIAWAH ISLAND - The Newberry Wolves' men's golf team dropped six strokes from their first round score, moving from the foot of the leaderboard in the second round of the Kiawah Classic by Aramark at the Turtle Point GC on Monday.
The Wolves shot 303 (+15) and moved ahead of local rival Presbyterian and just two strokes back of Louisiana-Monroe. Newberry is grouped with those teams and selected individual competitors in the third round Tuesday for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Newberry was led by a trio of golfers at 75 (+3) on the day. Luke Atack moved up to 60th in the individual standings with a 36-hole subtotal of 151. He had three birdies in Monday's action.
Spencer Skiff had an erratic scoring day on the way to his 75, with five birdies mixed in. He is tied with Carlos Leandro in 79th. Leandro shot 79 Monday.
Evan DeGrazia notched two birdies en route to a 75 Monday and is tied for 94th. Fredrik Fossum carded a 78 Monday is is tied for 114th on the individual leaderboard.
Newberry is the only Division II team in the 22-team field. Hosts Charleston Southern (566) lead the solid field and Augusta's Robin Petersson is topping the field at -10 through two rounds. Loyola (Md.)'s Connor Flach notched a hole-in-one in Monday's action.
