Wolves sweep Corvias, ECAC Golfer of the Month honors for second straight month

DANBURY, Conn. – The Newberry College men’s and women’s golf teams swept the Corvias, Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Golfer of the Month honors for the second straight month, as announced by the conference office Wednesday evening.

Freshman Karly Mims (Lexington, S.C.) was crowned with her second honor on the women’s side while senior Ryan Wilkinson (Gallivants Ferry, S.C.) picked up his first plaudit for the men.

Mims was spectacular in the South Atlantic Conference Championship Tournament on April 12-14, leading the Wolves to a runner-up finish at the event. Individually, Mims posted a season-low 74 in the first round to sit atop the leaderboard after the first day. She rounded out the tournament with a pair of 79s to lock up a third place finish, her second top five finish in the last three competitions, earning her All-Tournament first team accolades.

For the year, Mims tallied five top 25 finishes, including two in the top five at the SAC Championship (3rd) and the Wingate Intercollegiate (4th). She posted an 80.4 stroke per round average in her freshman campaign, competing in all 20 rounds for the season. However, she shot an average of 78.67 strokes per round during the spring, improving her fall mark by over four strokes.

Wilkinson wrapped up his career for Newberry with a pair of top 10 finishes in the month of April. He began the month with a third place finish at the University of Mount Olive Trojan Invitational. In the second round of the contest, Wilkinson carded a career-low score of 68 en route to his career-low 54-hole score of 215 (76, 68 and 71) and his highest finish of the season. The highest finish in Wilkinson’s career was when he took medalist honors at the Campbell/Sunaco Open in 2014.

He followed up with another top 10 performance at the South Atlantic Conference Championship Tournament two weeks later. He posted a 151 (76 and 75) 36-hole score in the rain shortened affair, notching the ninth slot on the leaderboard. Wilkinson was named to the All-Tournament second team for his efforts while leading the Wolves to a tie for fourth place.

For the season, Wilkinson totaled five top 25 finishes, including three in the top 10. He averaged 74.7 strokes per round while competing in all 23 rounds on the year. The 2015 SAC honorable mention selection leaves Newberry with the eighth lowest all-time scoring average of 76.67 strokes per round in his four years for the Scarlet and Gray.
