ROCK HILL – The Newberry men’s golf team picked up a pair of honorees in the 2015 South Atlantic Conference men’s golf awards, as announced by the league office Thursday afternoon.
The senior duo of Tommy Hurst (Miami, Fla.) and Ryan Wilkinson (Gallivants Ferry, S.C.) were tabbed second team all-SAC and honorable mention all-SAC, respectively.
This is the second year in a row Hurst has been named second team all-conference while Wilkinson was tagged with his first distinction.
Hurst averaged 74.4 strokes per round this season to go along with five top 25 finishes which included two as runner-up. He started off the year with a 4-under par 68 at the rain-shortened Kiawah Island Imitational for a second place honor but his best tournament came at the Lander Bearcat Classic this spring. Hurt carded an 8-under par 208 in the 54-hole event with scores of 68, 71 and 69 en route to his second runner-up finish of the year.
Thirteen of Hurst’s 21 rounds came at or under 75 this season while the 4-under par 68s set a career low 18-hole score. The 208 at the Lander Bearcat Classic is the best score of any tournament in his Newberry career. He currently sits in seventh place in the Newberry men’s golf record books for best scoring average in a career with a 75.34 stroke per round average.
Wilkinson picks up his first honor after shooting 74.6 strokes per round this season to finish just behind Hurst for the team lead.
He totaled four top 25 finishes with his first coming in the Jay Jennison Memorial. Wilkinson carded a 4-over par 220 with scores of 74, 70 and 76 to finish tied for ninth. His best tournament of the year came at the Trojan Invitational on April 6-7 where he carded his career low round of 68 en route to a third place finish with a 1-under par 215 (76, 68 and 71).
Fourteen of Wilkinson’s 21 rounds came in at 75 or better while the 68 in the second round of the Trojan Invitational is his lowest 18-hole score and his total score of 215 is also his best 54-hole score.
Wilkinson is currently in ninth place in the Newberry men’s golf record book with a 76.71 career stroke average.
"Congratulations to both Tommy and Ryan on their SAC All-Conference awards," head men's golf coach Howard Vroon said. "They both have earned it and are very deserving. Each has worked extremely hard to develop every part of their game. As senior captains, both of these guys have been very important to the success of our program. They have set a high standard for their teammates and held them accountable to it. Tommy and Ryan are special people and speacial players, I am very happy for them to be recognized by the South Atlantic Conference. Well done to both."
The pair of seniors will lead the Wolves into their final South Atlantic Conference Championship Tournament this weekend, April 19-21, at the Firethorne Country Club in Marvin, N.C.
