CONOVER, N.C. – The Newberry College men’s golf team is off to a great start after the first round of the Rock Barn Intercollegiate. The Wolves anchor down second place going into tomorrow’s final round. Newberry posted a team score of 297 in Monday’s first round at the 72-par, 6,960 yard Rock Barn Golf and Spa course. The Wolves sit just one stroke behind current leader Chico State and four strokes ahead of third place Wingate and Georgia Southwestern, while only 18 strokes separate first place from 18th place in the packed field.

Senior Ryan Wilkinson leads the way for Newberry as he turned in an even 72 in the first round which has him tied for third place in the individual standings. Wilkinson went one over par in the front nine and capped off the back nine by going one under.

Fellow senior Tommy Hurst also finds himself in the top ten after the first day, tied for seventh place. Hurst turned in nine-hole scores of 36 and 38 to finish two over for the round. Senior Nick Lussier carded a score of 75 and is tied for 14th place. Junior Fredrik Fossum tallied a four over 76 on the day and is tied for 27th. Sophomore Luke Atack is tied for 51st after shooting a 41 on the back nine, but recovering to shoot a 37 in the final nine of the day for a six over 78.

The tournament will conclude with 18 holes tomorrow morning and wrap up the fall season for the Wolves.
