Monday, April 14, 2014

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - Newberry freshman Richard Mansell was the first player in the 2014 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship to card a round of even par or better, leading the Wolves to an 11-stroke improvement at the Sevierville Golf Club's River Course.

Newberry is in fifth place after Monday with a 615 (313-302, +39), only eight strokes back of tournament leaders Tusculum (+31). Wingate is at +32 and Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial are tied at +35.

Mansell (Staffordshire, England) shot an even par 72 in Monday's second round, as the Wolves led the field with 15 birdies on the day. He was consistent throughout the day, going 1-over on the front nine and 1-under on the back nine. Only Wingate's Ben Gebhardt (67, -5 today) has shot a better round in this year's tournament. Mansell is tied for third on the individual leaderboard at 149 (+5).

Tommy Hurst (Miami, Fla.) shot a 2-over par 74 on the day, thanks to three birdies and no bogeys on the back nine, including closing with birdies on 17 and 18. He is tied for 13th at 153 (+9).

John Paul Ferguson (Travelers Rest, S.C.) shot a 3-over par 75, carding a birdie on three of the River Course's four par 5 holes. He is now tied for 19th at 154 (+10). Ryan Wilkinson (Gallivants Ferry, S.C.) is now tied for 36th at 160 (+16) and Dixon Walker (Lexington, S.C.) is tied for 47th with a 164 (+20).

Tuesday's final round is set for a shotgun start, with the tee time flexible due to incoming weather in the Sevierville area. Newberry's five are scheduled to play the River Course one last time with golfers from Lincoln Memorial and Queens.
