SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - The Newberry Wolves are eight strokes off the lead in a tie for fourth place after the opening round of the 2014 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship on the Sevierville Golf Club's River Course on Sunday.
Newberry shot a 25-over par 313 and is tied with Carson-Newman and Queens, with plenty of room for movement on the leaderboard in the tournament's final two days. Lincoln Memorial leads at 305 (+17), but only 11 strokes separate the top 10 teams.
Richard Mansell (Staffordshire, England) leads the Wolves after a 5-over par 77, tied for 10th. He had a birdie on the par five third hole and shot no worse than bogey on anyhole.
Ryan Wilkinson (Gallivants Ferry, S.C.) is 10 spots behind Mansell on the leaderboard despite shooting only one stroke higher at 6-over par 78, in a tie for 20th. Wilkinson had three birdies on the front nine, but opened up the back nine with a pair of double bogeys before finishing with seven straight pars.
Tommy Hurst (Miami, Fla.) and John Paul Ferguson (Travelers Rest, S.C.) are tied for 24th after each shooting a 7-over par 79. Hurst had three birdies on the day, while Ferguson had one. Dixon Walker (Lexington, S.C.) rounded out the Newberry contingent with an 11-over par 83, in a tie for 47th.
The Newberry five will be grouped with golfers from Carson-Newman and Queens on Monday, with tee times beginning at 10 a.m.
