Wolves close out regular season with dominant tournament win at River Landing
Tuesday, April 1, 2014

WALLACE, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves cruised to the tournament championship and claimed the top three spots in the individual standings to close out the 2013-14 regular season in style at the UNC Pembroke/Campbell Oil/Sunoco Classic at the River Landing Golf Course on Tuesday.

The Wolves shot 882 total (290-295-297), easing past Erskine by 11 strokes for their second tournament championship of the season. Newberry was also the champions of the Irish Creek Invitational in February.

The 882 total features three of the Wolves' top 10 rounds of the season and is Newberry's lowest 54-hole tournament score since a third place finish at the UWF Argonaut Classic in the spring of 2012.

Newberry's top competition actually came from within the Wolves' own ranks, as teammates battled for medalist honors down the stretch. The winner of that internal battle wound up as Ryan Wilkinson (Gallivants Ferry, S.C.), who shot a 32 on the back nine of the final round. His 217 (73-73-71, +1) earned Newberry's first individual championship since Matt Campbell in the 2012 Food Lion SAC Tournament. Wilkinson's scored bested his previous career low by two strokes.

Wilkinson edged Tommy Hurst (Miami, Fla.), who was the tournament runner-up with a 218 (72-73-73, +2). Those two performances overshadowed Richard Mansell (Staffordshire, England), who finished alone in third place with a 219 (68-75-76, +3). Mansell earns his first top five finish, ties his career low for 54 holes and earns the best finish by a Newberry freshman in the last three years.

Ewen Donaldson (Edinburgh, Scotland) competed in the tournament as an individual and tied for 13th in the standings with a 225 (79-75-71, +11). Dixon Walker (Lexington, S.C.) tied for 22nd with a 228 (77-74-77, +14) and Nick Lussier (Barton, Vt.) finished 70th with a 246 (80-80-86, +30).

With a week off to prepare, the Wolves will look to carry the momentum of this championship into the 2014 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament in Sevierville, Tenn., on April 13-15.
