Wolves tied for first after opening round at Irish Creek

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - A trio of Newberry Wolves are within three shots of the lead at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate, helping the scarlet and gray to a tie for first place after the first round at The Club at Irish Creek.

Newberry shot its best round of the season with a 7-over par 291, tying with Barton and Limestone for the team lead in the 36-hole event. Erskine is the next closest team with a 12-over par 296.

Dixon Walker (Lexington, S.C.) leads Newberry's efforts in a tie for third place with an even par 71. Just behind him in a tie for sixth place at 1-over par 72 is Tommy Hurst (Miami, Fla.).

John Paul Ferguson (Travelers Rest, S.C.) is only a stroke behind Hurst in a tie for 12th place with a 2-over par 73. Richard Mansell (Staffordshire, England) is tied for 21st at 4-over par 75 and Ryan Wilkinson (Gallivants Ferry, S.C.) rounds out the Wolves' contingent with an 11-over par 82 in a tie for 73rd in the 96-golfer field.

The tournament concludes with 18 holes of play Tuesday.
