SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - Newberry College senior Chandler Gruenemeier finished with the lowest round of the day to claim runner-up honors at the 2013 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships, leading the Wolves to a tie for sixth place in the team competition.
Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) had seven birdies and two bogeys in Tuesday's final round at the Sevierville Golf Club's River Course, carding a 5-under par 67. His 3-under par 213 placed him four strokes behind medalist Connor Froning of Lincoln Memorial.
His 67 tied for the seventh-best single round in the history of the SAC Championships, while his 213 is tied for the eighth-best personal performance in the 24-year history of the tournament.
The Wolves shot their best round of the tournament Tuesday with a 302 (+14), shooting a 64-over par 928 for the three-round tournament to tie for sixth place with Brevard.
Gruenemeier's runner-up finish placed him on the all-tournament first team, while Jon Weiss (Sumter, S.C.) finished in sixth place with a 223 (+7) to earn second team all-tournament honors. Weiss shot a solid 1-over par 73 Tuesday for his best round of the event, carding two birdies and three bogeys.
Dixon Walker (Lexington, S.C.) finished the event in 40th place with a 249 (+33) after a 10-over par 82 Tuesday, while Ewen Donaldson (Edinburgh, Scotland) finished 42nd with a 38-over par 254, notching a 12-over par 84 Tuesday. Tommy Hurst (Miami, Fla.) shot a 80 (+8) in Tuesday's round.
