KIAWAH ISLAND - The Newberry College men's golf team tied for fourth in the 2012 Kiawah Island Invitational, following the lead of senior Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.), who finished in third place in the tournament at the Cougar Point Golf Course.
The Wolves shot a 299 Tuesday for a two-day total of 14-over par 590 to tie for fourth with Erskine College. No. 5 USC Aiken finished in the top spot with an even par 576 to finish ahead of No. 12 North Alabama by one stroke. Coker finished in third, three strokes ahead of the Wolves.
Gruenemeier shot an even par 72 for a two-day total of 4-under par to tie for third. Armstrong's Shad Tuten finished the tournament at 6-under par for medalist honors, while Georgia Southwestern's JP Griffin was second at 5-under.
Jon Weiss (Sumter, S.C.) tied for 11th with a 1-over par 145, while Tommy Hurst (Miami, Fla.) tied for 36th with a 7-over par 151. Layton Truax (Savannah, Ga.) tied for 53rd at 10-over par 154 and Ryan Wilkinson (Gallivants Ferry, S.C.) was 91st at 26-over par 170.
The Wolves return to action next Monday and Tuesday at Flagler's Jay Jennison Memorial. The tournament will be held at the Palencia Golf Course in St. Augustine, Fla.
