KIAWAH ISLAND - The Newberry College men's golf team sits in a tie for fifth place after shooting a 3-over par 291 in the opening round of the Kiawah Island Invitational at the Cougar Point Golf Course on Monday.
Scores were very low for an early-season tournament, as four teams finished the first day under par, led by North Alabama with an 8-under par 280 and USC Aiken with a 7-under par 281. Newberry is tied with Georgia College and St. Thomas Aquinas. Newberry is the top current South Atlantic Conference team of the five league teams in the field.
Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) led the Wolves and is tied for second place individually after a 4-under par 68. The round is his 10th career sub-70 round and is Newberry's second-lowest round of the season.
Jon Weiss (Sumter, S.C.) is tied for 17th with an even par 72 and Tommy Hurst (Miami, Fla.) is tied for 42nd with a 3-over par 75, with Layton Truax (Savannah, Ga.) is tied for 53rd just one stroke behind at 4-over par 76. Ryan Wilkinson (Gallivants Ferry, S.C.) is tied for 80th with a 10-over par 82.
The Wolves begin the second and final round of the tournament with tee times starting at 10:50 a.m. in groups with Coker and Georgia College.
