SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - The Newberry Wolves' men's golf team lopped 17 strokes off of their first round score at the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate to jump seven spots to finish in a tie for fourth at the Sevierville Golf Course on Tuesday.
Newberry's second round 289 was the lowest team round of the tournament and tied the Wolves in fourth with conference foes Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne on the course where the 2013 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships will be played in April.
Jon Weiss (Sumter, S.C.) finished in second after improving by eight strokes from Monday. He finished with a 5-under par 67 Tuesday to card a final 2-under par 142 to finish four strokes behind medalist Adam Hedges of Belmont Abbey.
Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) was also under par Tuesday with a 1-under 71. He finished tied for 17th with a 3-over 147 for the tournament. Tommy Hurst (Miami, Fla.) and Layton Truax (Savannah, Ga.) were each 9-over par for the event to tie for 38th. Dixon Walker (Lexington, S.C.) was 21-over par to finish in 80th, while individual competitor John Paul Ferguson (Travelers Rest, S.C.) tied for 81st at 27-over par.
The Wolves are back in action next Monday and Tuesday at the Kiawah Island Invitational at the Cougar Point Golf Course on Kiawah Island.
