Newberry alumnus Ben Lown qualifies for U.S. Amateur

MACON, Ga. - Newberry College 2011 graduate Ben Lown of North Augusta qualified for the 2012 United States Amateur Championship on Tuesday, winning a playoff for the fifth and final qualification spot of the sectional qualifier at the Brickyard at Riverside.

The 112th U.S. Amateur will be held at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo., on August 13-19. [U.S. Amateur Website]

Lown is one of the top golfers in Newberry history, finishing his career in the top two in the history of the program and the South Atlantic Conference in scoring average and rounds played. He was a two-time NCAA National Tournament participant in 2008 and 2011. He was a three-time all-SAC selection, the 2011 SAC Scholar Athlete and the 2008 SAC Freshman of the Year and honorable mention All-American.

Lown carded the second-best score of the day Tuesday with a 2-under par 70. He was tied for 13th coming into the day after an even par 72 Monday. He defeated incoming Clemson freshman Cody Proveaux, of Leesville, and Corey Carlson, of Green Cove Springs, Fla., for the final spot.
