NORMAN, Okla. - Newberry College' Matthew Campbell has been named to the Golf Coaches Association of America/PING Division II All-American honorable mention team, as announced Tuesday.
Campbell, who was named all-Southeast Region by the GCAA earlier this month, is the third player in program history to earn All-American honors from the GCAA. Daniel Stanley was second team in 2011 and third team in 2010, while Ben Lown also earned honorable mention in 2008.
Campbell completed his career as the Newberry record-holder for all-time rounds played with 107 career rounds and a stroke average of 73.71, which ranks second in school and South Atlantic Conference history. His 72.68 season average is the fourth-best in school history and fifth-best in SAC history.
He was the 2012 South Atlantic Conference individual champion with a 1-under par 215 at the Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C., and then finished tied for 19th at the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional with a 4-over par 220 at the same course. He had six top 10 finishes in his senior season.
Campbell was the 2011 SAC Golfer of the Year and he earned all-SAC honors in all four of his collegiate seasons. He was named GCAA/PING all-region in 2011 and 2012.
