CONOVER, N.C. - Newberry College senior Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) won the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship with a 54-hole score of 1-under par 215 at Rock Barn's par 72, 6,944-yard Jones Course on Tuesday, leading the Wolves to a second place finish in the team competition.
Campbell is the third consecutive SAC medalist from Newberry and fourth in the last five seasons. His 215 ties for the 11th-best score in the history of the SAC Championships as he eased to a five-stroke victory over Wingate's Braden Jackson.
After trailing by 27 strokes entering the final round, the Wolves shot a 1-over par 289 Tuesday, but Wingate won the event with a 13-over par 877 to Newberry's 28-over par 892.
Campbell ties former teammate Ben Lown for the SAC record for the most rounds played in a career with 104 after Tuesday's 3-over par 75.
Freshman Jon Weiss (Sumter, S.C.) also finished on the first team all-tournament in a tie for fourth place with a 7-over par 223.
Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) shot the lowest round of the tournament in the final round with a 3-under par 69 on the way to a 15th place finish at 10-over par 226.
Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) tied for 25th place with a 16-over par 232, while Jon Lussier (Barton, Vt.) was in 27th with an 18-over par 234 despite shooting just 1-over par Tuesday.
The Wolves will now await word on their chances to qualify for the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional Tournament, which will be held back at Rock Barn on May 7-9.
