PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Newberry Wolves men's golf team recovered from Monday's shaky second round to post even par in the final round and claim a tie for third place in the Argonaut Invitational with a 56-hole total of 17-over par 881 at the Pensacola Country Club on Tuesday.
Newberry tied with Delta State in its final event of the regular season. No. 6 North Alabama completed the tournament with a 9-under par 855 to win the title, while host No. 7 West Florida was in second with 8-over par 872.
Freshman Jon Weiss (Sumter, S.C.) was the Wolves' top finisher at the event, coming in with a 1-under par 71 Tuesday to complete his tournament with a 4-over par 220 in a tie for 11th individually. He leads Newberry with 11 rounds of par or better this season.
Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) tied for 14th one stroke behind Weiss after a 2-under par 70 Tuesday. He completed the event with a 5-over par 221.
Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) and Jon Lussier (Barton, Vt.) tied for 20th with 7-over par 223 for the event, while Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) was in a tie for 26th at 8-over par 224.
Competing as individuals, Tommy Hurst (Miami, Fla.) tied for 26th with an 8-over par 224 and Nick Lussier (Barton, Vt.) tied for 35th with a 12-over par 228.
Newberry will next participate in the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championships at the Rock Barn Golf and Spa in Conover, N.C., on April 16-17.
