LAKELAND, Fla. - The Newberry College Wolves finished the 2012 Matlock Collegiate Classic in seventh place in a highly competitive field at the Lone Palm Golf Course on Tuesday. Newberry shot 294-292-297=883 (+19), 12 strokes back from tournament champion Florida Tech.
Freshma Jon Weiss (Sumter, S.C.) shot an even par 216 for the tournament to set his new career 54-hole low and tie for eighth place individually in the tournament. Weiss was the tournament leader in par four scoring, shooting 4-under on those holes.
Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) shot a 2-under par 70 in the third round Tuesday to finish the tournament with a 4-over par 220 and finish in a tie for 16th place. He carded one of only 12 eagles in the tournament.
Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) and Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) each tied for 39th in the tournament with 9-over par 225's, while Tommy Hurst (Miami, Fla.) tied for 46th with a 12-over par 228.
The Wolves were in their first tournament under new head coach Howard Vroon. The scarlet and gray will next be in action on March 12-13, when they host the inaugural Magnolia Invitational at the Country Club of Orangeburg.
