LAKELAND, Fla. - The Newberry College Wolves are tied for seventh after two rounds at the Matlock Collegiate Classic at the Lone Palm Golf Course, hosted by Florida Southern College.
In a field with the Nos. 1, 2, 8, 16, 20 and 25 teams in the final fall national coaches' poll, the Wolves find themselves 10 strokes off of the lead and ahead of two top 25 teams in their first tournament under the direction of head coach Howard Vroon.
Newberry shot a 10-over par 586 (294-292) in the 36 holes of action on Monday. No. 2 Barry and Florida Tech are tied for the tournament lead with even par 576, five strokes ahead of No. 25 Florida Southern, No. 1 Lynn and St. Edward's.
The Wolves were led in Monday's action by freshman Jon Weiss (Sumter, S.C.), who tied his career low with a 2-under par 70 in the second round. He is tied for third individually with a 3-under par 141.
Senior Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) and junior Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) are in a tie for 28th with 4-over par 148. Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) is only two strokes back from them with a 6-over par 150 to tie for 41st, while Tommy Hurst (Miami, Fla.) is tied for 54th in the 75-player field with a 9-over 153.
Killen carded one eagle on Monday, while Weiss and Campbell each notched eight birdies. Weiss is tied with tournament leader Marcus Segerstrom of Lynn in par-4 scoring, with both players 4-under on those holes. Newberry has the lowest overall score on par 3's with Columbus State and West Florida at 12-over
The Wolves resume action with 18 holes to conclude the tournament on Tuesday.
