CLEMMONS, N.C. - The 19th-ranked Newberry College men's golf team finished in fifth place at the Will Wilson Tanglewood Intercollegiate at the Tanglewood Park Golf Club. Newberry finished with a team score of 880 in the three-round tournament.
Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) led the Wolves, shooting a 4-over par 214 for the tournament on the par 70 course. Campbell finished in a tie for eighth place. Jon Weiss (Sumter, S.C.) tied for 14th place in the tournament after shooting a 7-over par 217.
Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) finished in 16th place with a 8-over par 218 in his first tournament of the season, shooting a 2-under par 68 in Tuesday's final round. Competing as an individual, Layton Truax (Savannah, Ga.) finished in 36th at 19-over. Ben Firebaugh (Norfolk, Va.) tied for 42nd at 23-over par and Nick Lussier (Barton, Vt.) tied for 49th at 33-over.
Newberry finished one stroke ahead of No. 25 Belmont Abbey and four strokes ahead of No. 17 USC Aiken. Carson-Newman won the tournament at 861, while No. 22 UNC Pembroke finished 15 strokes ahead of the Wolves.
Newberry wraps up its fall season Sunday through next Tuesday at the Rollins Invitational at Rio Pinar Golf Course in Orlando, Fla.
