COLUMBUS, Ga. - The 19th-ranked Newberry College men's golf team sits in a tie for 11th place after two rounds at the highly competitive AFLAC/Cougar Invitational at the Country Club of Columbus.
After a stellar performance at last week's Sandestin Collegiate Championship, the Wolves found themselves tied for 15th of the 17 squads after the first round on Monday morning, shooting a 303, the second-worst round of the young season.
However, the Newberry squad responded well in the afternoon round, shooting a 294, the fourth best round of the season to move up to a tie for 11th with fellow South Atlantic Conference competitor Carson-Newman.
On the par 71 course, Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) was Newberry's top shot on the first day, carding a 5-over par 147 to tie for 28th, while Jon Lussier (Barton, Vt.) is tied for 40th with a 7-over par 149.
Ryan Wilkinson (Gallivants Ferry, S.C.) responded to a rough morning round with an afternoon even par 71 to sit in a tie for 51st after the first day with a 9-over par 151. Jon Weiss (Sumter, S.C.) is tied for 62nd with a 12-over par 154, while Ben Firebaugh (Norfolk, Va.) is tied for 87th with a 24-over par 166.
Lynn is leading the tournament at 3-over after two rounds, while Barry's Daniel Stapff is leading individually at 5-under after two rounds. Play concludes with 18 holes Tuesday.
