DESTIN, Fla. - The Newberry College men's golf team is tied for second place after the first 36 holes of the Sandestin Collegiate Championship, and Ben Firebaugh is tied for the individual lead entering Tuesday's final round at the Raven Golf Course.
Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va.) shot a 3-under par 139 through two rounds, tying him for the tournament lead with Marcelo Rozo of Lynn University. Firebaugh shot a 1-under 70 in the morning round and made an improvement down to a 2-under 69 in the afternoon round. His 139 ties for the ninth-best 36 holes in school history, and gives him a shot at one of the best 54-hole scores in program history. Firebaugh has carded 12 birdies in the first two rounds, three more than his nearest competitor. He also currently leads the tournament in par 4 scoring.
Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) is in a tie for eighth place with a 2-over par 144, while freshman Jon Weiss (Sumter, S.C.) is just one stroke back in a tie for 13th place with a 3-over par 145. Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) is tied for 31st with a 7-over par 149, and Ryan Wilkinson (Gallivants Ferry, S.C.) sits in 51st place with a 14-over par 156.
As a team, the Wolves are just two strokes behind tournament host and leader West Florida, dropping 10 strokes from the first round to the second. The Wolves' second round 283 was the lowest round by any team in the field in either round by two strokes, and is the eighth-best single round in the progam's history.
The tournament concludes with 18 holes tomorrow.
