PROSPERITY, S.C. - In the opening tournament of the 2011-12 season, the Newberry men's golf team posted two top five individual performances in the Honda of Columbia Fall Classic at the Mid-Carolina Club.

The Wolves were lead by senior Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) who posted the lowest round by a Newberry golfer in the opening 18 holes of the tournament with a score of 73. The first round of the tournament wrapped up with three Wolves in the top 20 as Campbell was joined by sophomore Ben Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va.) and freshman Jon Weiss (Sumter, S.C.), both who finished with a score of 75.

Only one golfer in the field of 79 finished under par during the first 18 as UNC Pembroke's Jordan Walor posted an opening round of 70.
Despite the persistent wind throughout the first and second rounds, the course dried up considerably as the second round began. With the course playing quicker and the field prepared for a second trip around the track scores dropped.

Nine members of the field posted scores below par in the second round including Firebaugh and Campbell. Firebaugh's second round 69 propelled him from a tie for 13th at the end of the first round to tie for fifth and a spot on the All-Tournament team.

Campbell began the second round tied for seventh and traded shots with one of his playing partners in Walor. Despite posting a 69 in the second round, Campbell's charge was not enough as Walor finished with a one stroke victory over Tusculum's David Talley and Campbell.

Sophomore Cameron Lamb (Easley, S.C.) and freshman Ryan Wilkinson (Gallivants Ferry, S.C.) notched top 30 finishes in the season opener.
In the team format the Newberry “Scarlett” team finished the Saturday event in a two way tie for fourth with UNC Pembroke “B”. The Wolves second team finished in eight, while the third team finished in 14th.

While Walor won the individual event, it was Wingate that won the team event with a score of 579.

Newberry returns to the course for a two-day event beginning September 26 at the Sandestin Collegiate Championship hosted by West Florida at The Raven Golf Club in Destin, Fla.
