NEW YORK - The Newberry College men's golf team is ranked 16th nationally in Division II in the Nike/GolfWorld preseason coaches poll, released today.
An Elite Eight participant in the 2011 NCAA Division II National Tournament, the Wolves bring back a loaded lineup despite losing two of the program's all-time greats to graduation. South Atlantic Conference Golfer of the Year Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) returns for his senior season, as well as Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England), who each set the program record for lowest round at one point last season.
The Wolves begin their 2011-12 season on Saturday, Sept. 17, as Newberry hosts the annual Honda of Columbia Fall Classic at the Mid-Carolina Club in Prosperity. Newberry will field three teams, and UNC Pembroke and St. Andrews Presbyterian will each field two squads. Cape Fear CC, Catawba, Clayton State, Lander, Mars Hill, Southern Wesleyan, Tusculum and Wingate will also be at the tournament.
