NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College head men's golf coach Brian McCants has announced the addition of four players to the Wolves' squad for the 2011-12 season.
The Wolves, who are coming off of a top five finish at the 2011 Division II National Tournament, will welcome Nick Albano, John Paul Ferguson III, Tommy Hurst and Nick Lussier. The quartet joins Jon Weiss, a November signee.
Albano is a graduate of the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy in Marietta, Ga. Albano was the GGGA team captain in 2011 and was named most improved in the 2010-11 season. He has only played two seasons of golf, but has already shot a 75 in tournament play. He was also the caddy for Nick Reach in a 2011 US Open qualifier.
Ferguson is a graduate of Travelers Rest HS in Travelers Rest, S.C., and was a four-year letterman for the Devildogs. He played in the 2009 and 2010 AAAA State Championship tournament and was named all-Upper State in 2010. He is a two-time winner of the Green Valley CC Championship and founded a program introducing the game of golf to inner city youths.
Hurst is a graduate of the American Heritage School from Miami, Fla. He was the winner of the 2010 Carolinas Junior PGA, shooting 71-68=139 at the Burning Ridge GC in Myrtle Beach. He shot a tournament record 64 in the 2010 Cardinal Gibbons Invitations and finished third in the US Kids Teen Championship, including a 66 in the third round of that tournament. Hurst has been named all-Dade County for five consecutive seasons and won back-to-back AAU championships in 2004 and 2005.
Lussier is a graduate of the Hank Haney IJGA from Barton, Vt. Nick's older brother Jon is a rising senior for the Wolves' golf team. Nick shot a 74-67=141 to tie for medalist honors at the IJGT at Port Royal in Fall 2010, with the second round 67 marking his first bogey-free round. He was the Vermont state high school Division II champion in 2010, winning in a playoff against the defending champion and shot a 72 to finish third in the 2010 New England Championship. He finished 2-over in the 2010 US Amateur qualifier in Massachusetts.
These four new Wolves will join their new teammates and will open the 2011-12 season on their home course, as Newberry hosts the Honda of Columbia Fall Classic at the Mid-Carolina Club on Sept. 17.
