DeLAND, Fla. - The Newberry College men's golf team qualified for the 2011 NCAA Division II Golf Tournament with a fourth place finish at the South/Southeast Super Regional at the Victoria Hills Golf Club on Wednesday. The Wolves shot a 54-hole total of 879 (+15) and closed out the tournament with a 295 (+7) to land in the qualification places.
The national tournament qualification is the second in program history, following in the steps of the 2008 team on which seniors Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) and Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) were freshmen and finished 19th in the tournament. Newberry is the first school in the history of the South Atlantic Conference to qualify for the NCAA National Tournament for a second time, as the only other SAC schools to qualify were Catawba in 1995 and Elon in 1997.
The NCAA Division II National Tournament will be held at the "Fighting Joe" Course of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Ala., from May 16-20. At the finals, all 20 teams and eight individuals which qualified in regional play will complete 54 holes of stroke play. Following 54 holes of stroke play, an individual champion will be declared along with finishers 2-10. The top eight teams after 54 holes of play will be placed into a bracket and seeded based on 54-hole scores.
Newberry's three-round total of 879 is the seventh-best 54-hole score in school history and second-best in postseason play.
Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) lead the way for the Wolves in Wednesday's round, shooting a 1-under par 71, while Stanley rebounded from a tough round Tuesday with a 1-over par 73 today.
Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) was Newberry's top finisher in the tournament with a 221 (71-76-74; +5) to finish in a tie for 25th place individually. Gruenemeier was just one stroke behind Killen with a 222 (78-73-71; +6) to tie for 30th.
The senior duo of Lown (72-73-79) and Stanley (71-80-73) tied for 40th with 224 strokes (+8), while Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) rounded out the Newberry contingent in a tie for 47th with a 225 (75-73-77; +9).
Joining Newberry at the national tournament from the South/Southeast Super Regional are tournament champion Lynn University (+9), Barry University (+11), Barton College (+13) and Columbus State University (+21). The remainder of the championships field will be officially announced by the NCAA on Thursday.
