Newberry in third after first round of South/Southeast Super Regional
Monday, May 2, 2011 | by Stanley, Killen shoot under par as Wolves tie for second-best postseason round in school history

DeLAND, Fla. - The Newberry College men's golf team is in third place after the opening round of the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional Tournament at the Victoria Hills Golf Club on Monday. The Wolves shot a 1-over par 289 on the 7,072-yard course.

The Wolves find themselves in the best position they've been at in regional play since finishing the 2008 first round in second place. The 2008 Indians advanced to the national tournament. Today's 289 is the second-best NCAA round in program history, falling only behind the first round 286 shot at the 2008 national tournament.

Newberry's national tournament hopes are definitely alive and well, as the top five teams in the tournament advance to the national tournament. West Florida leads the tournament with a 3-under 285, while Lynn shot an even par 288. After Newberry's 1-over 289 are Belmont Abbey in fourth with a 3-over 291 and Delta State in fifth with a 5-over 293. Three teams (Columbus State, Barry and Barton) are tied for sixth with 6-over 294.

Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) and Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) are leading the way for Newberry, as the pair carded 1-under par 71's today. Stanley had a fairly clean round with three birdies and only two bogeys, while Killen had two birdies and one bogey. Stanley and Killen are tied for eighth individually.

Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) is tied for 13th in the tournament with an even par 72. While Lown had a team-high four birdies, he had two bogeys and a double bogey. South Atlantic Conference Golfer of the Year Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) is tied for 44th with a 3-over par 75, while Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) is tied for 83rd with a 6-over 78, but should feel confident as he was even through his final 10 holes.

The Wolves will be able to see what they need to do to match the competition Tuesday, as they are in the final groups to tee off. Newberry's tee times begin at 12:50 p.m. Live scoring for the tournament will be available at
