NEW YORK - The Newberry College men's golf team is ranked 19th in the latest Golf World/NIKE Golf Division II Coaches' Poll, which will appear in the next issue of Golf World magazine.
The ranking marks a drop of two spots for Newberry, which was previously tied for 17th in the poll. Chico State held on to the No. 1 spot in the Golf World/NIKE Golf Division II coaches' poll, claiming five of the 17 first-place votes.
The Wildcats have finish first or second in seven of their eight tournaments in the 2010-11 season, including a runner-up finish in last week's Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational. Close on Chico State's heels is No. 2 Lynn, which earned five first-place votes, No. 3 West Florida and No. 4 Central Oklahoma, both schools also receiving first-place votes. Rounding out the top five is Western Washington. New to the top 25 is No. 21 UNC-Pembroke and No. 24 Grand Canyon.
Newberry rounds out the season next Monday and Tuesday at the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships at the Rock Barn Golf Club in Conover, N.C.
